A clock to look at twice. Triangles of natural wood veneer form a circle of rays, dyed with natural indigo from Tokushima. As the angle of the light changes, the wood shifts in color. The time is only part of what catches your eye.

Mori Kougei has sliced and laid wood veneer in Tokushima since 1953, first as surfaces for furniture and interiors, and since 2020 as its own pieces. Its signature is kōsen-bari, "ray-of-light pasting": triangles of veneer laid so the grain shifts as the light moves, which is the face of this clock.

Wood, Light and Indigo

The triangular veneers meet around the center, turning the grain into a radial pattern. Natural indigo gives that pattern its color; an oil finish completes the surface. The face brings together the geometry of a circle and the variation of wood.

Ebony-faced plywood hands sit over the dial, with a quartz movement behind the everyday task.

Care

Set the time with the dial on the back of the movement, not by turning the hands.
Keep it away from direct sunlight, high humidity and the outdoors.
Replace the battery about once a year, and take it out if the clock is stored for a long time.
