Nothing to tap, spin or swipe. A Burlington Northern SD45 and a flat car, stopped between two bumpers at 1:160, for the moment the work stalls.

The blue mug in the gallery is there for scale; the listing is the desk train.

XD — You and the thing.

Unfidget. Something for your brain to settle on.

It is the opposite of a fidget toy: a machine designed to work at full size, made small and intricate enough that you hold back from handling it. For some people, that small pause may help them settle back into focus.

Lineage

Made by Atlas (locomotive and flat car) and Kato (track) · Arranged by Hexmonde

Every piece was purchased new. The SD45 is from Atlas's Master Silver line, made from all-new tooling with painted safety rails. The flat car sits on a die-cast metal frame. Kato's Unitrack gives both a ballasted bed.

1:1 and 1:160

The full-size SD45 is 65 feet 9½ inches long and carries a 20-cylinder engine rated at 3,600 horsepower. At 1:160 that length comes to about 12.5 cm, and the model keeps the handrails, the roof fans and the number boards on the nose.

Warm Pool or Scale Out?

Stuck between keeping capacity warm and scaling on demand? Railroads do both. Their diesels run water coolant without antifreeze, so in a cold yard they are left idling rather than shut down: a warm pool, ready to go. On a steep grade, extra locomotives are added at the foot of the climb and cut off at the top: capacity for the burst, released after.

The Pictured 6505

EMD built the full-size 6505 in June 1971, one of 96 SD45s that Burlington Northern bought new. BN retired it in 1986; it went on to run for Wisconsin Central.
